Sustainability - the new luxury in interior design?
Tanisha Raffiuddin, Founder & Creative Director of Concept Culture asks, can interior design have a low impact without compromising aesthetics or quality?
Below is an excerpt from the thought leadership piece commissioned by Architecture and Interior Design Studio De Rosee Sa for their website journal:
“It is now possible, and indeed essential, that high quality, unique and beautiful interiors can be designed in harmony with nature. To do this, it is important to understand the environmental impact of each interior design choice and how it sits within a circular economy. Sustainable luxury design should balance design and beauty with circularity and longevity.
While embarking on a sustainable home renovation can be at times complex and overwhelming, thinking about sustainability from the onset of the design process and interweaving it into the design concept will make it less so. Source materials, products and finishes that are both sustainable and luxurious, which have a low environmental impact whilst staying true to the desired design aesthetic. A good place to start sourcing materials and products with legitimate sustainability credentials is the Cradle to Cradle® certification platform by the Cradle-to-Cradle Products Innovation Institute, which recognises products that meet stringent requirements across five categories: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness.
It is an exciting time for sustainable luxury. As demonstrated, it is possible, and indeed essential, that quality, unique and beautiful interiors can exist in harmony with nature. Ultimately, making sustainable and conscious design choices for the future of our planet will be the best expression of luxury.”
